Review: SICILIANA, Lower Parel – A Mediterranean Pause in Mumbai

When I walked into Siciliana at Palladium’s Gourmet Village, I immediately sensed that this wasn’t designed to be just another Italian restaurant in Lower Parel. Backed by Speciality Restaurants Limited and led by Anjan Chatterjee, the vision is clear to transport diners to Sicily, not through theatrics, but through warmth, generosity and honest food. With Chef Saby curating the menu, there’s an intention to keep things ingredient-forward and rooted in tradition.

The ambience does much of the storytelling. Terracotta hues, patterned tiles and sun-washed textures give the space a Mediterranean softness. It feels inviting rather than imposing a place where you can sit back, pour a glass of wine and let the evening unfold slowly. In a fast-paced neighbourhood, Siciliana feels like a conscious pause.

We began our meal with the Layered Avocado Tartare, and it set a promising tone. Fresh, chunky avocado paired beautifully with a bright tomato salsa, while the tortilla crisps added that necessary crunch. It tasted clean, balanced and thoughtfully put together. The Millet Fish Fingers followed with a pleasant and subtle zing, though they felt more familiar than memorable.

For pizzas, we tried the Red Hot Picante. Interestingly, while a few at the table expected more heat, I appreciated that it wasn’t aggressively spicy. It allowed the flavours to come through without overpowering the palate. The Pesto Ricotta Gnocchi was comforting and well executed, though I did feel it could have pushed slightly further in richness or complexity. The Lamb Ragu, however, left me wanting more as the sauce lacked the deep, slow-cooked intensity I associate with a good ragu. The lamb and tomatoes needed greater depth to truly shine.

And then came desserts the true highlight of my experience. Nonna’s Tiramisu delivered exactly what it promised: a pronounced coffee kick balanced with creamy indulgence. But what truly stayed with me was the Tres Leches. It was impossibly soft, delicately soaked and melted almost instantly in the mouth. Light yet decadent, it was the kind of dessert that makes you pause mid-bite.

For me, Siciliana is about atmosphere and moments. While some savoury dishes could benefit from stronger depth of flavour, the freshness, warmth and standout desserts make it a worthwhile experience. It’s a space best enjoyed unhurried with good company, good wine and time to linger.
