Review: This Tiny Sandwich Shop Is Toasting Mumbai’s Expectations

Some places open with big ambitions. Angry Toast opens with an obsession. Tucked into just 450 square feet, the grab-and-go café houses its own micro-roastery behind a gleaming steel counter, a rarity in Mumbai. Inspired by a memorable sandwich-and-coffee experience in London, founders Kedarnath Shetty and Suhas Dwarakanath have built a concept that’s refreshingly simple: exceptional sandwiches, serious coffee, and absolutely no unnecessary frills.

The interiors mirror the concept, minimal, industrial, and efficient. It’s not a café designed for lingering; it’s built for grabbing a great sandwich and coffee on the go.

What immediately stood out was the bread. Angry Toast keeps it simple with two carefully perfected options, a pillowy milk bread that’s soft, buttery and comforting, and a beautifully fermented sourdough with just the right chew and tang. Considering the founders reportedly spent months perfecting the bread, every bite makes that obsession evident.

The menu is where Angry Toast really shines.

The Katsu Chicken is hands down the hero. Crispy, juicy and perfectly balanced, it’s the kind of sandwich you find yourself craving long after you’ve finished it.

The Lamb Smash almost feels like a burger cleverly tucked between slices of bread. The lamb is rich and satisfying, although I did wish the cheese had melted a little more to tie everything together.

The Four Cheese Vindaloo is bold, punchy and unapologetically cheesy. The spicy vindaloo kick cuts through the richness beautifully, making it one of the menu’s most memorable creations.

And then came dessert.

The Honey Butter Toast deserves a category of its own. Crisp golden toast topped with luscious mascarpone, butter and honey creates the perfect balance of crunch and creaminess. It is, without exaggeration, a sweet orgasm on a plate.

I’m not much of a coffee person, so I wasn’t expecting the drinks to steal my attention.

The Taro Latte surprised me the most. Smooth, creamy and subtly sweet, it’s the drink that could genuinely make a non-coffee drinker like me become a fan.

The Hazelnut Praline Coffee, however, wasn’t my favourite. It leaned a little too heavily on the coffee notes for my palate, and I couldn’t quite find the nutty sweetness I was hoping for.

One detail I genuinely appreciated was the thoughtful selection of milk alternatives. Whether you’re lactose intolerant or simply prefer plant-based milk, Angry Toast offers multiple options without making it feel like an afterthought.

In a city obsessed with over-the-top cafés and endless menus, Angry Toast does something far more difficult, it keeps things focused and gets the fundamentals right. From bread that’s been painstakingly perfected to sandwiches worth returning for, this tiny toast shop proves that when you obsess over the basics, the results speak for themselves.

Sometimes, all you really need is great bread, an even better filling, and the confidence to let both do the talking.
